Early Malay medical books in PNM
En. Fadli mentioned 2 early Malay medical books which are kept in Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (PNM). He will send further information re the books later. The first book is "Kitab Tibb" (PNM accession number MSS 1323). The second book is "Ta'bir Mimpi Kitab Tibb" (PNM accession number MSS 1470).

En. Fadli says there are still many more early Malay medical books in PNM which he has not been able to browse but he has been able to trace a few such as "Kitab Tib Pontianak" and a few others.
Book: "Kitab Tibb"
PNM accession number MSS 1323.

Book: "Ta'bir Mimpi Kitab Tibb"
PNM accession number MSS 1470.

Book: "Kitab Tib Pontianak"
PNM accession number MSS ______ ?
Professor William Roff
William Roff (2000). "The Origins of Malay Nationalism", Oxford Publishing, London.
Book: "The Origins of Malay Nationalism"
This book was written by Professor William Roff and published by Oxford Publishing, London in 2000.
En. Fadli says Professor William Roff's book is a 'must read' for obtaining insight re the history of Malaysia prior to WW2. It discussed the Malay awareness movement and touched directly on the Malay intelligence between 1890-1940. Only 2 names of doctors were mentioned in Professor William Roff's book. They were included because they could have been involved in politics at that time. The two doctors were Dr. Abdul Samad and Dr. Burhanuddin al-Helmy Mohd. Noor. This indicates that there were probably no other doctors who were involved in politics prior to 1940. However, this is a misconception as Dr. Hamzah Taib (Class of 1923) was an important politician in Johore.

Dr. Hamzah Taib (Class of 1923)
Dr. Hamzah Taib was an important politician in Johore. His biodata as a politician has been recorded in a book "Sumbanganmu Dikenang" by Professor Ramlah Adam.

Professor Ramlah Adam
She is a professor in one of the local universities (which?).
Book: "Sumbanganmu Dikenang"
This book was written by Professor Ramlah Adam. It recorded the biodata of Dr. Hamzah Taib (Class of 1923). Professor Ramlah Adam lined up his name together with other great leaders such as Dato' Onn, Ahmad Boestamam, E.E. Thuraisingam, Tan Cheng Lock, Dr. Burhanuddin al-Helmy Mohd. Noor, Ibrahim Haji Yaakob, and the rest.
Encik Abdul Samad Ahmad
Abdul Samad Ahmad is an author, writer, novelist and a leader of Malay literature (tokoh sasterawan). En. Fadli has just read Abdul Samad Ahmad's memoir entitled "Sejambak Kenangan".
Book: "Sejambak Kenangan"
This book was written by Abdul Samad Ahmad. En. Fadli obtained further information re Dr. Haji Abbas Alias (Class of 1936; check whether it is 1936 or 1938) from this book.
Datuk Dr. Haji Abbas Alias (Class of 1936)(1914-2004)
Dr. Haji Abbas Alias was ex-President of PAS, a national opposition party of Malaysia. He was arrested by the British at Lokap Balai Polis Campbell (Campbell Police Station Lockup) and sent to Penjara Pudu (Pudu Jail), KL and Penjara Changi (Changi Jail), Singapore between December 1941-February 1942 along with other great nationalists including Ahmad Boestamam, Ishak Haji Mohamad (better known as Pak Sako), Ibrahim Haji Yaakub, Sutan Jenain, and others. He was released by the Japanese on 16 February 1942. It is thus clearly indicated that Dr. Haji Abbas Alias was a doctor who was also involved in politics.

En. Fadli apologised and penned off.

It is 7.37 am.
