It is with great sadness that I post here on the demise of my colleague, Prof Rogayah Jaafar. I knew her since June 1982 when I joined the USM Medical School. Prof Rogayah was from Johor. She was born on 8 January 1955. She headed the Department of Medical Education. She retired at 58.

She was admitted to Hospital USM on 10 January 2016 and passed away earlier this morning. She passed away on Thursday, 28 January 2016, 30 minutes after midnight. She was 61 when she passed away.

She leaves behind her husband, Prof Zulkifli Ahmad (Community Medicine USM Medical School & USM Dental School Research Deputy Dean), and 5 children - eldest boy and 4 girls.

Her daughters and husband were present at the mortuary where staff could pay their last respect. Her son was on his way to HUSM. I met the family members except her son.

She will be interred at the Muslim burial site at Kg Baung Bayam, near Cherang. I don't know the burial place.

Rogayah Jaafar is a Professor of Medical Education and the founding Head of the Department of Medical Education at the School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the University of Cairo, Egypt, her Master of Health Professional Education from the University of New South Wales, Australia and her post graduate fellowship certificate in Health Leadership Development (ICHLD) from the University of Chicago, USA. Dr. Rogayah’s teaching and research interests include curriculum development, partnership and leadership development, interprofessional education and women’s  health issues.

In conjunction with our 20th Anniversary of the establishment of IMU, I am happy to inform you that we will be organizing a Medical Education Symposium themed ‘Medical Education in Malaysia’ on Saturday 3 November 2012 in our IMU Bukit Jalil Campus. The main objective of the symposium is to highlight and document aspects of the history of medical education in Malaysia and to discuss issues pertaining to the direction medical education in Malaysia should take with regard to meeting Malaysia’s health needs for the 21st century. In conjunction with the symposium, an exhibition will be held on the Life and Times of the Late Professor Tan Sri Dr T J Danaraj, who as you are aware was the foundation dean of our first medical school.

In Search 48, Dr. M. Bakri Musa had mentioned about Dr. Awang Hassan from Johor Bahru (JB):

• He was the Malaysian High Commissioner to Australia (1973) and then Governor of Penang (1981)
• He had two sons who are surgeons, Dr. Yahya Awang and Dr. Hussein Awang
  
  
  • Dr. Yahya Awang was former head of Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) and he did the first heart transplant in Malaysia. Dr. Yahya was Dr. Bakri's medical officer (MO) in JB.
  • Dr. Hussin Awang is a urologist and performed kidney transplants at GHKL. He is now at Tawakkal.

In Search 67, En. Mohd. Fadli Ghani had accessed the Penang Government website which mentioned Tun Dr. Hj Awang Hassan, Yang Dipertua Negeri Pulau Pinang Kelima, was a graduate of KEVII, Singapore in 1936.

Dr. Luqman bin Mazlan (ex-USM student) e-mailed me on 21 April 2006 with the subject "History of Medicine in Malaya - Who were the early Malay doctors? He is currently with Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, UKM. He was surfing the Internet and chanced to visit this research log on history of medicine. His late grandfather was Tun Dr. Hj Awang Hassan (Class of 1936) from Johor Bahru (JB).

Prof. Rogayah Jaafar responded to my e-mail on 22 April 2006. According to Prof. Rogayah, Dr. Luqman bin Mazlan was one of our bright medical students for the 1999-2003 Academic Session (19th batch). He undertook a 4-week elective in Maastricht during his 4th year, along with Seenikatty Abdul Hamid and Caroline Eng Siew Yin in April 2002.

In addition, Prof. Rogayah confirmed that Tun Dr. Hj Awang Hassan (Class of 1936) was a former Governor of Penang and was married to her former boss, Dr. Zabedah, the Director of the Casualty Department at the Sultanah Aminah General Hospital.

Dr. Luqman bin Mazlan e-mailed again on 13 July 2006. He had contacted 3 of his uncles - Dr. Yahya Awang, Dr. Hussin Awang, and Dr. Abu Bakar Sulaiman - and he wrote that they would be glad to help me re this search.  He wrote he would forward their e-mails. He also referred me to the same Penang Government website (http://www.governorsofpenang.net/5.php) which En. Mohd. Fadli Ghani had referred to earlier. According to Dr. Luqman bin Mazlan, his late grandfather was an O&G doctor at Kandang Kerbau Hospital, Singapore and in Muar, Johor, both before and after WW2. Our late neighbour from JB, Pak Cik Hassan, had also mentioned that Tun Dr. Awang Hassan was an O&G doctor.

The Penang Government website (http://www.governorsofpenang.net/5.php) has his birth date as 10 November 1910.

His Majesty Sultan Abu Bakar of Pahang was the DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong while Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed was the Prime Minister, and Tun Datuk Dr. Haji Awang bin Hassan was the 5^th Governor of Penang. He was admired for his warm personality and powerful leadership qualities.

Tun Datuk Dr. Haji Awang bin Hassan (Class of 1936) probably knew his senior, Dato' Dr. Che Lah bin Mohd. Joonos (Class of 1930).  Dato' Dr. Che Lah bin Mohd. Joonos was a royal doctor to Sultan Pahang but lived in Minden Heights, Gelugor (after he retired) until he died in 1986.

En. Roslan (husband of Puan Noraini, PPSP clerk) was the 'ADC' to Tun Datuk Dr. Haji Awang bin Hassan. En. Roslan is Puan Jusheda Zakaria's brother. Puan Jusheda works in the Academic Office, PPSP, USM.

Tun Datuk Dr. Haji Awang bin Hassan was succeeded by Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir, the 6^th Governor of Penang. Prof. Nor Hayati Othman is a relative of the wife of the late Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir.
