Oldest Malay Sultanate ...

The Kedah Sultanate existed long before the Kelantan and Malacca Sultanates. It is the oldest Malay sultanate known in Malaysia.

* Note: (a) The 3 Sharifah ladies mentioned above were also connected to the earliest Arab clan of Kampung Batu Uban in Penang. These Arabs were there before Francis Light arrived in Penang. Sharifah Seha was also connected to the Malacca Arab people in the vicinity of Masjid Tengkera (Tranquerah Mosque) where Sultan Hussein Shah (the last Singapore-Johor Sultan) was interred. Today, her descendants can be found in Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan. Some of her descendants/relatives included Syed Sheikh Alhadi (tutor to the Riau ruler Raja Haji Ali), Syed Alwi Alhadi (eldest son of Syed Sheikh), Dr Mohamed bin Alwi Alhadi (an early Malay doctor; an eminent gastrosurgeon), Prof Syed Mohsin Syed Sahil Jamalullail, etc. Some of the graves can be found at Tanah Perkuburan Islam, Masjid Jamek Mukim Jelutong in Jelutong Timur, Penang.

Prime Minister's Car

What cars did our prime ministers use? What did our first prime minister use? He used a white Rolls Royce. The Rolls Royce was then bought over by Sultan Yahya Petra and it was brought back to Kelantan. Who owned the Rolls Royce in the first place?

I'm looking for a white Rolls Royce that once belonged to Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos. I believe that he had used it in the post-war, probably from 1945 onwards, mainly for to send his children to school. He had a chauffeur who wore a white suit. I have no other details at this time. Another account I heard was he lived in Sg Buloh.

Rolls Royce was produced in 1920s and ceased in 2002.

I have seen 3 Rolls Royce in Malaysia so far but I have not seen a white Rolls Royce till I saw one today at Muzium Kelantan in Kota Bharu.

The blue painted metal piece in front of the grill reads 'Tengku Mahkota Kelantan', which refers to Tuanku Yahya Petra.

This 1947 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith was used by Tunku Abdul Rahman and was then purchased by Tuanku Yahya Petra of Kelantan in the 1960s. This Rolls Royce and the other one next to it were on display at Muzium Kelantan. Photographed by me on 2 June 2012.

Tuanku Yahya Petra

Tuanku Yahya Petra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim was born on 10 December 1917 in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He was educated at Francis Light School in Penang. In 1934 he then went to Britain for further studies for 5 years. He returned to Kelantan in 1939. He was proclaimed Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan on 1 February 1948. He was Regent in 1953 and 1958 when his father Sultan Ibrahim was away. Source: Who's Who in Malaysia 1971-1972.

Madrasah Al-Mashoor

Who was Al-Mashoor/Almashoor? What is Almashoor? Where is Almashoor?

The Almashoor is an Arabic suffix and commonly connected to Islamic learning at the madrasah in Penang. The madrasah learning began at Masjid Melayu Aceh in Acheen Street. The madrasah was attended by mainly children as this was the preferred form of early education by the Malays (the other being education at Christian schools). Thus, the number of students grew and a new venue was needed and the madrasah shifted a few premises. 

The first headmaster of Madrasah Almashoor was Dr SMA Alhady's grandfather, Syed Sheikh al-Hadi.

Teachers at the latter more established Almashoor school included:

1. Dr SM Baboo, father-in-law of Dr Abdul Wahab bin Mohd Ariff.

2. Shaikh Sulaiman bin Bakar Rafee (born 1916, Makkah, Saudi Arabia-died 2004, Gelugor, Penang) - publisher, printer, bookshop owner, thinker, and Islamic educator. He taught Quran and Arabic at Al-Mashoor School.

History of Al-Mashoor School

In 1916, the Madrasatul Al-Quran was established in Acheen Street by Arabs for the purpose of teaching the tenets of Islam and the Quran to other Muslims. In 1918, this religious school shifted to Kampong Jawa Lama and changed its name to Madrasah Al-Mashoor Al-Islamiah. This school had shifted a few times to cater for the increasing number of students and is presently known as the Al-Mashoor Secondary School.

Pada tahun 1916, Madrasatul Al-Quran ditubuhkan di Lebuh Acheh oleh orang Arab khusus untuk mengajar Al-Quran dan Fardhu Ain. Pada tahun 1918, sekolah agama ini berpindah tempat ke Kampong Jawa Lama dan bertukar nama kepada Madrasah Al-Mashoor Al-Islamiah. Madrasah ini telah berpindah tempat beberapa kali bagi menampung bilangan pelajar yang meningkat dari masa ke semasa dan kini dikenali sebagai Sekolah Menengah Al-Mashoor.
