Professor Rahmatullah Khan


INTRODUCTION

My husband and I have known Prof. Rahmattullah Khan since 1982-83 when we first worked at the USM Medical School in Penang. We were also with his family in Adelaide in 1985-86. We met again at USM Medical School in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan in the 1990s.

Prof. Rahmattullah Khan is called Rahmat by his colleagues or Prof Rahmat by his students.

Prof. Rahmattullah was born in Bangkok, Thailand and grew up in Malaysia. He speaks many languages including Malay, English, and Thai, and is a talented orator. He is a progressive Muslim leader locally as well as overseas.

Prof Rahmattullah graduated from the USA in the early 1980s. He is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).

Prof. Rahmattullah Khan is the youngest son of Dr Abdul Wahab Khan bin Muhammad Lal Khan (c1898-1956), an early Malay doctor who served in the northern states of Malaya (Perlis, Kelantan) and Siam (now Thailand). Dr Abdul Wahab Khan was a famous eye doctor (ophthalmologist) who also treated a past Sultan Kelantan.

Prof. Rahmattullah Khan was recently awarded the Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) federal award in Kuala Lumpur, by the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu, in conjunction with the birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (The Star, 8 June 2011). The award ceremony was held at Istana Melawati on 30 September 2011.

He is married to Prof Yasmin Anum and they have 2 successful children - Omar and Nuur Iman.

Prof. Yasmin Anum bt Mohd Yusof hails from Perak. She graduated from the USA. She was a lecturer and a Professor of Biochemistry with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

Omar Khan completed his secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Dato Ahmad Maher in Kota Bharu and attended Kolej Matrikulasi Yayasan Saad. He then completed his BSc (Electrical Engineering) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 2005. After working as an Electrical Engineer for some years he now is a music composer and producer using the name Omar K.

Nuur Iman went to the same school as Omar but after the SPM joined the Matriculation Centre at IIUM. After Matriculation at IIUM and after 18 months in the Kulliyah of Science at IIUM she transferred to Murdoch University to complete a BSc in Biomedical Science. Upon returning to Malaysia she enrolled in Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences to do Medicine (in final semester in 2011).
