Little India in Georgetown, Penang

What is Little India? Why does Little India exist? What does Little India do? How many Little India are there in Malaysia?

Little India is an enclave of the Indian community amidst other multi-racial community that exists in many towns on the west coast of peninsula Malaysia. Little India indicates and beckons us to remember the arrival of the early Indians to Malaya and the Straits Settlements.

Why did the Indians choose to arrive in Malaya and its islands? For trade.

The Indians were a highly skillful group of people in the 'far east'. They traded spices, gold and fabrics. In Little India, you can expect to find everything needed to live a comfortable Indian life. There are a lot of little shops within Little India. They include authentic Indian spice shops, garland shop, coconut water hawker and Indian stores. Little India projects a miniature Indian life outside India. It is a replica of the real thing in India.
