It is with great sadness that I post here on the demise of my colleague, Prof Rogayah Jaafar. I knew her since June 1982 when I joined the USM Medical School. Prof Rogayah was from Johor. She was born on 8 January 1955. She headed the Department of Medical Education. She retired at 58.

She was admitted to Hospital USM on 10 January 2016 and passed away earlier this morning. She passed away on Thursday, 28 January 2016, 30 minutes after midnight. She was 61 when she passed away.

She leaves behind her husband, Prof Zulkifli Ahmad (Community Medicine USM Medical School & USM Dental School Research Deputy Dean), and 5 children - eldest boy and 4 girls.

Her daughters and husband were present at the mortuary where staff could pay their last respect. Her son was on his way to HUSM. I met the family members except her son.

She will be interred at the Muslim burial site at Kg Baung Bayam, near Cherang. I don't know the burial place.

Rogayah Jaafar is a Professor of Medical Education and the founding Head of the Department of Medical Education at the School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the University of Cairo, Egypt, her Master of Health Professional Education from the University of New South Wales, Australia and her post graduate fellowship certificate in Health Leadership Development (ICHLD) from the University of Chicago, USA. SULTAN PERAK KE-34 MANGKAT

His majesty Sultan Azlan Shah passed away on 28 May 2014. He leaves behind a wife Tuanku Bainun bt Mohd Ali (81), a crown prince Raja Dr Nazrin Shah (58) and 3 princesses. A second prince Raja Ashman Shah had passed away in 2012 - he was with the Haqqani Foundation, a sufi group. All the princes and princesses are married and have children.

BIRTH

Prince Azlan Shah was born on 19 April 1928 at Kg Manggis, Batu Gajah in Perak, the youngest prince of Sultan Sir Yussuf Shah and his second wife, Hajah Khadijah bt Dato' Sri Ahmad.

EDUCATION

Prince Azlan Shah received his early education at the Government English School in Batu Gajah before he attended the Malay College in Kuala Kangsar. Raja Azlan Shah then continued his studies overseas at the University of Nottingham (Hon DCL) and at Lincoln’s Inn in London. He obtained the Barr-at-Law in 1954.

THE PERAK THRONE

The Perak royalty is linked to the ancient Malacca Sultanate and the Siak Sultanate, both have origins in Sumatra.

Raja Azlan Shah ascended to the Perak throne via a predetermined sequential royal appointment that is unique to the Perak royal household. It consists of a series of posts, each is held by an eligible prince. A prince moves up the serial posts when the one above it becomes vacant (as in death of a prince).

A prince starts his appointment as Raja Kechil Bongsu, and then becomes Raja Kechil Tengah, Raja Kechil Sulong, and Raja Kechil Besar, before he becomes the Heir Apparent, Raja Muda.

In old B/W landscape photographs of the Perak royal household, these 5 princes appear with the ruling sultan, his wife, and palace guests.

Raja Azlan Shah first became Raja Kechil Bongsu in 1962, and finally became the Raja Muda in 1983 (21 years).

BELANGSUNGKAWA

The Perak royal tradition follows the Malacca Sultanate at Johor-Riau-Lingga, whereby the incoming sultan must be announced before the burial of the deceased sultan can take place.

Raja Azlan Shah ascended to the Perak throne when his cousin passed away on 31 January 1984. Sultan Azlan Shah was proclaimed at Ipoh on 3 February 1984, and crowned at Istana Kinta in Kuala Kangsar on 9 December 1985.

KING OF MALAYSIA

Sultan Azlan Shah became Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agung (Deputy King) in 1984, before he became Yang di-Pertuan Agung (King) in 1989. Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the Prime Minister of Malaysia during this time (1983-2003).

As the King of Malaysia, Sultan Azlan Shah was in charge of the Malaysian Army (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia, ATM), Royal Malaysian Navy (Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia, TLDM) and Royal Malaysian Air Force (Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia, TUDM).

He was the Field Marshal of the Malaysian Army (ATM), Admiral of the Royal Malaysian Navy TLDM), and Marshal of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM) (26 April 1989-25 April 1994).

SULTAN'S MILITARY APPOINTMENT

As the Sultan of Perak, he was the Col-in-Chief of the Royal Malay Regiment (Regimen Askar Melayu Diraja, RAMD) (1997-2014).

ENGINEERING APPOINTMENT

As the Sultan of Perak, he was the Col-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Engineers (1997-2014).

ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS & AWARDS

Raja Azlan Shah was the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM 1971-1984) and was the recipient of the Honorary Doctorate of Letters & Literature (Hon DLL).

He was the Chancellor of Universiti Malaya (UM 1986) and received the Honorary Doctor of Literature (Hon D.Lit.)

CHE BAINUN

Bainun was born in Penang on 7 November 1932. She is a year younger than my mother Tulip bt Che Lah (born in Kuala Lumpur 4 November 1931). Tulip's father was Dr Che Lah b Md Joonos, an early Malay doctor who served as a Hajj Doctor for the Malayan hajj pilgrimages in the 1950s-1960s. Bainun was educated at the St George's School at Residency Road, near Padang Polo and the Penang General Hospital (GH Penang). She would be a junior to the late Datuk Zubaidah Ariff who also attended the same school before WWII began in Penang. Datuk Zubaidah married to Datuk Mushir Ariff, and was the daughter-in-law of Sir Dr Kamil Ariff, an early Malay doctor in Penang

THE KIRKBY TEACHERS

Bainun then attended the Malayan Teachers’ Training College in Kirkby, Lancshire in England in the early 1950s.

Tulip and Bainun were in the same teachers' college at Kirkby and played hockey together on the same team. Tulip was the hockey captain. I don't know what position Bainun played. There is a photo of their hockey team at Kirkby. Bainun's room was across from Tulip's room. According to my late mother, news of Bainun's marriage to Raja Azlan Shah was buzzing at Kirkby well before the marriage itself. Another lady, Yasmin Hanoum bt Dr Kamil Ariff was also at Kirkby with Tulip and Bainun. Another lady at Kirkby would be Sarah bt Dr Sulaiman. Most of the surviving graduates of Kirkby meet at their Kirkby reunion in Malaysia where Tan Sri Dr Yahaya Ibrahim is chairman. Many of the Kirkby graduate teachers of the first (1951-1953) and second batch (1952-1954) have passed away. The Kirkbyites have their own website.

Tulip and Bainun were in touch till the early 1980s.

UNION

Raja Azlan Shah married Che Bainun bt Muhammad 'Ali on 9 December 1955 in Georgetown, Penang.

When Raja Azlan Shah ascended to the Perak throne, Bainun's name was styled H.R.H. Tuanku Bainun binti Muhammad ‘Ali. She was installed at Istana Kinta, Kuala Kangsar as Raja Permaisuri on 9 December 1985.

When Sultan Azlan Shah became the King of Malaysia (Agung), she was installed as Raja Permaisuri Agong on 19 February 1988 in Kuala Lumpur with her name styled Her Majesty.

The couple returned to Perak on 25 April 1994, after Sultan Azlan Shah completed his term as Agung.

CHILDREN

The royal couple has 5 children, 2 princes and 3 princesses.

1. H.H. Raja Datuk Sri Nazrin Shah bin Sultan ‘Azlan Shah (Raja Muda) succeeded his father as H.R.H. Maulana Paduka Sri Tuanku Sultan Nazrin Muizz ud-din Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Azlan Muhib ud-din Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Perak Dar ur-Ridzwan.
2. Y.A.M. Raja Datuk Sri Ashman Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Azlan Muhib ud-din Shah (Raja Kechil Sulong) (deceased 30 March 2012). His father-in-law is Kamarul Ariffin bin Muhammad Yassin. His son Y.M. Raja Datuk Ahmad Nazim Azlan Shah ibni Raja Datuk Sri Ashman Shah is Raja Kechil Tengah (b. 1994). His daughters are Y.M. Raja Eminah Alliyah binti Raja Datuk Sri Ashman Shah. (b. 1992) and Y.M. Raja Bainun-nisa Safia binti Raja Datuk Sri Ashman Shah (b. 1995).
3. Y.A.M. Raja Datuk Sri Azureen binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Azlan Muhib ud-din Shah.

DEMISE

Sultan Azlan Shah passed away at the National Heart Institute (Institut Jantung Negara, IJN) in Kuala Lumpur on 28 May 2014. He was 86 years old.

ROYAL FUNERAL & BURIAL

The funeral followed that of the Malacca Sultanate. The corpse was allowed a public display before the swearing in of the next sultan. Then the remains of the sultan was carried by several strong army personnel to the burial site. Sultan Azlan Shah was laid to rest after Solat Asar on 29 May 2014. Army and palace personnel and officials were involved with the burial procedures (refer to ASTRO Awani TV footage and posts & photos by royal family members/relatives in Facebook).

He is interred at Al-Ghufran Royal Cemetery adjacent to Masjid Ubudiyah at Bukit Chandan in Kuala Kangsar. His grave lies near that of his second prince, Raja Ashman Shah (refer to photos by Merah Silu in Facebook).

Jenazah Almarhum Yang Teramat Mulia Tunku akan disemayamkan di Dewan Penghadapan, Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Setar bagi maksud penghormatan terakhir pada sebelah pagi oleh para pembesar dan orang kenamaan, manakala oleh orang ramai mulai pukul 1 petang hingga 3 petang.

I grew up in the minority Muslim community of secular Singapore. My teacher father and social worker mother were both social activists and leaders of the community. I consider myself fortunate that because of my mixed parentage, my religious education was a combination of the traditional method of learning about Islam and the broader approach of a convert.

So we had an Ustazah coming to the house to teach us to read the Quran and perform the Solat in the right manner. My mother’s family was strict about performing the five daily prayers right on time and in carrying out all the other obligations imposed on Muslims.

My better understanding of the religion, however, came from my father who was the epitome of Islamic ideals. He emphasized the values that Islam expected of its followers – integrity, diligence, patience, compassion, charity, and the importance of amanah – what we are entrusted with and our duties to discharge that trust in accordance with Allah’s teachings.

I learnt and absolutely believe that the Quran is the Word of God, meant as a guide to mankind for all times and for all places. To me, the Quran is the anchor that prevents the ship of society from being buffeted by the winds of change in human behaviour resulting from a refusal to obey God’s prescriptions for human conduct.

From my constant reading of a paperback copy of Pickthall’s translation of the Quran while I was growing up, I was able to quote in English, verses which were to help me through life’s difficult times. Sadly, despite several forays into intensive Arabic courses, I am still unable to quote the Arabic text.

Surrounded as I was by people who personified Islamic values, it was inevitable that I develop a strong faith. The first test of my faith was when the question of marriage came up. I had been dating a Hindu classmate and under Islamic Law a Muslim woman can only marry a Muslim man.

For a valid Muslim marriage, my intended had to convert to Islam. Perhaps this is why many of my Muslim friends will not date non-Muslim men – to avoid this difficult situation. Our situation was made even more difficult because we were presented with a choice.

We were in Singapore and the Women’s Charter allows a civil marriage between a Muslim and a non-Muslim. Such a marriage would be valid by Singapore law but not according to Islam.

The Islamic Law on capacity to marry is codified from verse 2:221 of the Quran:
“Do not marry unbelieving women until they believe?
Nor marry your girls to unbelievers until they believe?”

Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s commentary of this verse explains: “If religion is at all a real influence in life to both parties or to either party, a difference in this vital matter must affect the lives of both more profoundly than differences of birth, race, language or position in life. It is therefore only right that the parties to be married should have the same spiritual outlook. If two persons love each other, their outlook in the highest things of life must be the same.” That is the traditional view.

There are those who advocate an amendment to the law, arguing that the Quran should be interpreted contextually –relate the text to its socio-historical context and then relate it to the present.

I have done that with the verse above but I am unable to identify the change in society that justifies a shift from the traditional interpretation.

The argument that women today are better educated, economically independent and more mobile does not rebut Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s explanation.

Has anyone studied mixed marriages where only the wife is Muslim? What is the effect on the spirituality of the woman, the upbringing of the children and the general pattern of their lives?

Such studies would be more relevant for consideration than the other reasons that have been advanced.

For example, we are told that other Muslim countries have made the changes and their action hailed as a progressive step forward in guaranteeing Human Rights for Muslim women. Shouldn’t we think about the impact of such changes before blindly following them?

I hear the call to amend the relevant domestic laws so that women can have equal rights with men in relation to the family and thus enable Malaysia to withdraw her reservation to Article 16 of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

Muslims can subscribe to the theory of the universality of Human Rights but only to the extent that it does not conflict with clearly stated principles in the Quran. We cannot reject Quranic verses just to bring ourselves in line with UN Conventions and the practice in other parts of the world.

Should the fear of being labelled “backward” push us into reforming our Islamic laws? Shouldn’t the fear of incurring Allah’s wrath be a more important consideration in our deliberations?

Thirty five years ago, I could not see any reason for going against the Word of God, whatever the law of the land provided, and today, I am still unable to find the justification for rejecting the Quranic injunction.

So what does one do when the person one loves refuses to convert to Islam? My advice to everyone in that situation has always been the same – break up and go your separate ways. I have been asked how I can be so heartless when Islam itself is not heartless.

Unfortunately, I have not found any verse that says it is all right to go against the teachings of the Quran for the sake of someone you love. No matter how much we may love a fellow human being, we must love Allah even more. And that, I guess, is the bottom line – how much do we love our God?

Those who believe know that Allah will give them what is best for them, even if it is not what they want. For me, it was a happy ending.

The only love in my life had been attracted to Islam from his school days in Penang when he watched Anwar Fazal’s family going to the mosque for Friday prayers in their “furry” Pakistani caps (as he called them). His knowledge and belief increased as he read all the books on Islam in my father’s vast collection during the six years of our courtship, so when the time came, we had an akad nikah in secular Singapore.

Now retired, the writer has served as a Professor, an Advocate and Solicitor, a Consultant for UN agencies, a Commissioner of Human Rights and an NGO activist.

Datin Dr Mehrun Siraj passed away early Tuesday, 29 June 2021, at her home. She was 75. Her husband is Sulaiman Abdullah, former Malaysian Bar president.

Her son is Huzir Sulaiman, a playwright and actor.

Dr Mehrun was a former professor of law and served as an advocate, solicitor and consultant for UN agencies.

Obituary: Tan Sri Aishah Ghani

Today, I received sad news of my grandaunt's demise. I heard her name before I went to school in Alor Star, Kedah. Her cousin, the late Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail (Coco) also told me about her and explained his relationship with her family. Her father and Coco's father were blood brothers. Coco went to fetch chickens in Alor Star during the war, where Aishah's father lived.

Bapak always told me about her but he didn't mention our families were related. I only knew from Coco that we were.

I have never met her in person. As a small child and teenager, I would always come close to the TV to watch her and listen to whatever she said. I read her biography in a book at Arkib Negara Malaysia before I completed writing my books on The Early Malay Doctors. She comes from a Malay background with religious upbringing. She went to Sumatra to study there.

Tan Sri Aishah Ghani was the first female MP in the first Malaysian Cabinet. She worked alongside Malaysia's PMs - Tunku, Tun Razak, Tun Hussien Onn and Tun Mahathir.

She passed away today, Friday, 19 April 2013 at noon. She is laid to rest at Tanah Perkuburan Islam at Bukit Kiara.

Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail (1921-2013)

Summary

Dr Haji Abdul Majid bin Ismail (b.1921). He was born in Kampong Baru, Kuala Lumpur. He attended schools in Kuala Lumpur, first Sekolah Melayu Segambut, then Maxwell School, and Batu Road School before he was accepted into Victoria Institution. He won a Selangor State Scholarship to study medicine. He graduated with MBBS from the University of Malaya in Singapore in 1950. He was a Queen’s Scholar and pursued his postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and then at the University of Liverpool. He became the first Malay Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 1958. He had served at General Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Seremban. He was the first Eisenhower Fellow in 1963. He became the Director of Planning & Research in the Ministry of Health before he became the second Director-General of Health Malaysia till his retirement in 1976.

Abdul Majid was born to Ismail bin Nae’mat on Tuesday, 15 November 1921, in his grandfather’s house in Kampong Baru, Kuala Lumpur. The house has ceased to exist. Today, this spot would be at the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Abdullah.

Obituary: Haji Ramli Sha'ari

Badariah Baba Ahmad has informed me in Facebook that Cikgu Haji Ramli Sha'ari has passed away.

Cikgu Tuan Haji Ramli bin Sha'ari (1931-2012)

From my previous conversation with Cikgu Haji Ramli Sha'ari, he said his wife had passed away long ago and was buried on the mainland. Cikgu Haji Ramli Sha'ari suffered from diabetic complications and had to go for dialysis.

Cikgu Haji Ramli Sha'ari was my mother's classmate and in the same option (Geography) at Kirkby College in 1952-53. Cikgu Haji Ramli Sha'ari had married Zainab bt Hamid Don. Both have passed away. They leave behind a son Razif Ramli who is with SKMM.

Razif Ramli is the cousin of Badariah Baba Ahmad as Zainab was the elder sister of Baba Ahmad. This announcement is from Razif Ramli:

Obituary: Hajah Wan Rohani Wan Husin

My stepmother-in-law, HAJAH WAN ROHANI BT WAN HUSIN (Wae) , passed away this morning at her home in Tanah Merah, Kelantan. She never went to school and could not write her own name. She could not read romanised text but she could read the Quran. She had cared for her 5 stepchildren, her own 7 children and about 50 stray kids who have nowhere to go from entire Malaysia. This was the lady who taught me Malay values, life skills and how to cook good Malay dishes. She will be dearly missed by all. May her soul be blessed. Inna lilla hi wa inna ilai hirojiuun. This sad news is from Professor Baharuddin Aris about his father's demise, which I received today, and which made me cry:

"My dad, Aris bin Haji Abdul Aziz (nephew to Dr Hamzah), is among the contributors to Professor Faridah's book. He recently passed away in Johor Bahru on March 8, 2012."

Allahyarham Encik Aris bin Haji Abdul Aziz (1934-2012)

BIODATA

Aris was born in 1934 in Johor, the fifth of six siblings. His parents were Haji Abdul Aziz and Hajjah Hasnah bt Orang Kaya Md Yassin. Aris was a direct descendant of Orang Kaya Ringgit from his mother. Aris was the nephew of Dr Hamzah bin Md Taib (1900-1955), an early Malay doctor.

As a teenager (at age 15-16) in the 1950s, Aris had met Dr Hamzah as Aris’ father was close to Dr Hamzah. Aris was a bright student who completed his Cambridge exams at age 14 years. He was the youngest at his school. His intelligence attracted Dr Hamzah who wanted to adopt him, as he had four daughters then but no sons yet.

En Aris worked as an officer in the Johor State Government. He retired early in 1984 at the age of 50.

FAMILY

His father, Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Md Taib married Hajjah Hasnah bt Orang Kaya Md Yassin bin Orang Kaya Md Salleh bin Orang Kaya Ringgit. Haji Abdul Aziz was the Penguasa Kastam Johor while Hajjah Hasnah was a Bugis homemaker.

His siblings were: Haji Junid (deceased), Hajjah Mariam (deceased), Md Yassin, Hajjah Maimunah, (Aris) and Hajjah Halimah.

En Aris married Maznah bt Muhammad, who also worked with the Johor State Government. She too retired the same year at the age of 48. His wife had passed away in 1999 at the age of 63 (1936-1999). 

With his beloved wife (both deceased).

En Aris' two sons are Professor Dr Haji Baharuddin (UTM) and Ir Izaddin (Switzerland).

Professor Baharuddin is a Professor of Multimedia and Internet-based Learning at UTM Skudai in Johor. On 15 May 2001, he became the First Malaysian to be listed in the Who’s Who In Instructional Technology on the World Wide Web, verified by the Malaysia Book of Records.

Ir. Izaddin is a consultant engineer with a Swiss multinational based in Switzerland.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

En Aris (then 74 years in 2009) had lived in his four-bedroom bungalow near Yayasan Pelajar Johor (YPJ) in Larkin Jaya, Johor Bahru.

To get to his house, take the North-South Highway to Kempas Baru and turn off into Jalan Langkasuka, the house is before the traffic lights.

DEMISE

En Aris passed away on 8 March 2012, aged 77. His death was informed by his son, Professor Baharuddin bin Aris on 25 April 2012.

His son Professor Baharuddin bin Aris has passed away.

CONTRIBUTION TO RESEARCH ON THE EARLY MALAY DOCTORS

En Aris was very helpful to this research. He was contacted through his son, Professor Baharuddin.

Dr Hamzah’s roots were informed by Encik Aris bin Abdul Aziz on 5-8 January 2008. He gave a detailed account of Dr Hamzah's life.

Among other things, Encik Aris explained many things in Johor history. He explained about Malay marriages and the meaning of salin tikar. He also explained the meaning of the term anak Muar. He emphasized the greatness of the Malay people especially those from Muar whom he knew, their families, links and roots.

He contributed in writing and drawing up the various family trees and added so much detail. He supplied the very important bulletin, Jendela Selatan, which was otherwise difficult to obtain. He supplied many photos for the author to keep.

It was very easy to write Dr Hamzah's biography after Encik Aris had explained all the details.

He also checked several drafts of Dr Hamzah's biography and would immediately call the author if he noticed any inconsistency, error or something was wrongly worded. He carefully checked all the details in Dr Hamzah's biography till he was happy with it. He was happy in the end and thanked the author for writing about his favourite uncle.

We will certainly miss him as he was a great contributor to this research since 2008.

We convey our condolences (ucapan takziah) to his two sons and gift them the reward (pahala) for reading Al-Fatihah. Please read Al-Fatihah for him. May he attain Husnul Khatimah and may his soul be placed among the soleheens and all the great people in Islam. In sya Allah.

Wow finally I found the pic of my "great-great grandfather" Haji mohd taib bin talib since his son Abdul Hamid was my great-grandfather my father told me he used to call him Encik Lelaki.

Introduction

A graduate from Iowa State University (BSc) and Robert Gordon University (PhD), he had vast experience in the field of Multimedia and Internet-based learning. Apart from being an administrator for more than a decade, he had published extensively based on his research & development (R&D) of Multimedia and Internet-based learning. His books in 2008 included: Learning Objects and Generative Learning for Higher Order Thinking - a chapter in a “Handbook of Research on Learning Design and Learning Objects: Issues, Applications and Technologies” & “How to Design Multimedia Web Applications: Theory Into Practice”. Among his research areas included: Computer Science Education – Teaching & Learning Computer Science, IT & Multimedia Technology based on Pedagogy/Andragogy Using ICT. He is also active as an editorial board member for journals such as JITE, IJCA, IJIKM, IJEL & AJET.

Tribute from UTM

He was former Dean of the Faculty of Education at UTM, Skudai, Johor. He passed away on 7 April 2019 at Hospital Serdang at 5.40 a.m.  He was 61 years old (1958-2019).

His remains (jenazah) was washed and cloaked (kafankan) at 8:30 a.m. at Hospital Serdang.

His remains were then brought to Surau Al Firdaus for Solat Jenazah at 10-10.30 a.m. He was laid to rest at Tanah Perkuburan Kg Desa Putra.

Prof Baharuddin was a Bugis of Wajo ancestry.

His residence was No. 32 Jalan Saujana 1/13. 

His home was at Sg Mehrab in Kajang.

His widow is Dr Maizahura.
