This is an update on Dr. Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak based on previous searches and further e-mail from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norsidah.

Dr. Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak (1884-1956; Class of 1910)

• He was either born in 1884 (more probable) or 1889 (less probable). When and where was he born?
• The family of Dr. Abdul Latiff could have probably originated from Kelang and that he too was born in Kelang
• He was the eldest son of a territorial chief (penghulu)
• He started education at Sekolah Melayu Kelang in 1892 at age 8 years
• Primary education was from Primary 1 through 7, a span of 8 years
• He completed Primary 7 (Junior Cambridge) in 1900 at age 16 years
• He then went to do Senior Cambridge at Victoria Institution (VI), High Street, Kuala Lumpur from 1900 until 1904. He completed Senior Cambridge at age 20 years. He was an ex-VI student. His classmate at VI was Cikgu Tuan Syed Syaidali (see Search 17)
• He then joined the 23 students who entered The Straits and Federated Malay States Government Medical School, Singapore in 1905.
• If he was born in 1884 and entered the Singapore Medical School in 1905, he entered medical school at age 21 which is more likely
• If he was born in 1889 and entered the Singapore Medical School in 1905 he entered medical school at age 16 which is unlikely
• He obtained the Licentiate in Medicine and Surgery (LMS) in 1910. He was probably the first Malay doctor to graduate from the Medical School.
• Dr. Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak was the first Malay doctor to graduate in 1910 from the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School (later named the King Edward VII (KEVII) College, Singapore in 1912)
• Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norsidah e-mailed that Dato' Dr. Abdul Majid Ismail (better known as "Coco" Majid) wrote Dr. Abdul Latiff completed his studies in 1910
• Dr. Abdul Latiff lived in Kuala Lumpur after returning from Singapore
• What did he do after graduation between 1911 and 1916 (a period of 5 years)? WW1 occurred in 1913-1918. Where was he during WW1? Was he recruited during WW1?

• His medical degree was certified and accepted by the General Medical Council of Great Britain in 1916, after which he served as a medical officer in GHKL.
• Why did it takes so long for the General Medical Council of Great Britain to certify and accept his medical degree? Where is this Council sited today? Can we trace his records in Great Britain today?
• Did he serve only at GHKL from 1916 to 1939? Did he serve only GHKL until he retired?
• Did he come to know about Dato' Dr. Che Lah Mohd. Joonos, who graduated from KEVII in 1930 and served either at GHKL or the Leper Settlement in Sungai Buloh? They might have been friends for at least 25 years!
• Tan Sri Dr. Abdul Majid Ismail @ Coco Majid (ex-Chief Director of Health Malaysia) recalled that he had received treatment from one of the doctors named Dr. Abdul Latiff in GHKL in 1937
• He most probably retired at age 55 years in 1939 (ie after WW1 but before the Japanese Occupation/WW2). When did he retire?
• If he continued to work after his retirement, he would have worked an additional 17 years post-retirement. What did he do after retirement?
• Dr. Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak had 9 children. Who are his children?
  • One of Dr. Abdul Latiff's son is Tan Sri Yaacob Latiff. He was the first Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur (first mayor of KL)

  • Hostel - A hostel block in Universiti Industri Selangor (UNISEL) has been named after him as Blok Dr. Latiff
    • He has provided a photograph of students in Asrama Dr. Latiff (ADL) 1985-1989. The ADL was a hostel for full-time students. It was located in Jalan Gurney, KL and was under the administration of Yayasan Selangor, which also administered Kolej Industri Selangor (Inspen). Inspen was upgraded to become UNISEL. The ADL was demolished to make way for the construction of the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) (see Searches 18 and 21)
    • The book "Bingkisan Merdeka" published in 1957 to commemorate our Independence celebration, also recorded the address of one of its contributors as "Asrama Dr. Latiff" (see Search 17)

In Search 2, Tan Sri Abdul Majid was one of the names listed at the 80th reunion gala dinner held by the Alumni Association of the KEVII College of Medicine, Universities of Malaya and Singapore in Mariott Putrajaya Malaysia on 29 November 2003.

In Search 15, Tan Sri Dr. Abdul Majid Ismail, ex-Chief Director of Health Malaysia noted that he had received treatment from Dr. Abdul Latiff in GHKL in 1937. If Coco Majid was born in 1921, then he was only 16 when he met Dr. Abdul Latiff in GHKL in 1937. Is this correct?

Dr. M. Bakri Musa had e-mailed on 20 November 2005 about Coco Majid with the subject "Re: hari raya". He asked to send his regard to Prof. Dato' Dr. Roslani Majid. He corrected Coco Majid's son is Jeffrey Majid. In another e-mail on 21 November 2005, Dr. Bakri Musa mentioned about a top USM medical student obtaining a royal award and asked if USM had any special programme for its top graduates.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norsidah A. Manap e-mailed that Dato' Dr. Abdul Majid Ismail had written about Dr. Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak, her grandfather.

• He was born in 1921 in his grandfather's house in Kampung Baru

Early Medical Programmes and Degrees Conferred in Singapore and Malaysia 1905-1960

Information to construct the following table on the early medical programmes and degrees conferred by Singapore and Malaysia were obtained by interviewing two KE VII medical graduates, Tan Sri Dr Raja Ahmad Noordin bin Raja Shahbuddin (Class of 1956) and Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail (Class of 1950). The interviews were held separately in May 2007. Tan Sri Dr Raja Ahmad Noordin was interviewed at home in Petaling Jaya while Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid was interviewed in his office in Jalan Damai, Kuala Lumpur.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bekas Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid Ismail (gambar), 92, meninggal dunia di kediamannya di Taman Duta, Jalan Langgak Duta di sini akibat sakit tua.
Dr Abdul Majid meninggal dunia pada kira-kira 4 petang tadi.
Jenazah Dr Abdul Majid akan dikebumi di Makam Diraja Shah Alam pada 11 pagi esok, selepas disembahyangkan di Masjid Negeri Shah Alam.
Presiden Persatuan Pesara Kerajaan Malaysia Tan Sri Wan Mahmood Pawan Teh ketika dihubungi Bernama berkata Dr Abdul Majid dimakamkan di sana bagi mengenang beliau yang pernah berkhidmat sebagai doktor peribadi Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah sekitar hujung tahun 70-an.
Allahyarham meninggalkan seorang isteri, Puan Sri Khairany Mahyuddin dan tiga anak, seorang lelaki dan dua perempuan.
Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah berkenan menziarah jenazah Allahyarham pada Ahad.
Dr Abdul Majid, anak kelahiran Kuala Lumpur, menyertai Kementerian Kesihatan pada 1950 dan berkhidmat di Hospital Besar Kuala Lumpur selepas memperoleh ijazah perubatan (MBBS) Malaya dari Universiti Malaya.
Pada 1951, beliau dilantik Pegawai Perubatan di Malayan Medical Service di hospital berkenaan.
Pada 1969, Allahyarham dilantik Pengarah Perancangan dan Penyelidikan di Kementerian Kesihatan.
Kerjaya beliau dalam perkhidmatan awam mencapai kemuncak dengan pelantikan sebagai Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan dari tahun 1971 hingga 1976. - BERNAMA

She was the fourth living child. She was active in welfare work. She was the longstanding secretary of Pertiwi as well as Lembaga Kebajikan Wanita Selangor. She is married to Haji Abdul Kadir, the first Bilut Valley FELDA manager. They have 5 children, son A'akif Fadzil (UPM), daughter Fadzilah A'ini a vet (UPM), Fauziah A'zni an accountant with I&P (resigned), Dr Fairuz Ashikin an obgyn (Faculty of Medicine, UKM) but now in private practice in Shah Alam, and youngest Faisal A'sri, in motoring skill business.

8. Fatmah @ Bibik Melaka - adopted by 'Nek Busu, wife of Abu Chenteng @ Tok Busu

Fatma was adopted by Tok Busu. She was a teacher trained in Kirby. Her children are Mushaini an accountant, Suhaimi catering business, Norshaini in United Nations in New York, Ain in Melaka, Iqram also catering and Anum in Dubai.

She too just recently passed on 89 yrs last nov. Then the third living is alang, who was in felda bilut. She too passed away last year. I wrote about the matter in my Facebook but nobody responded.

How many in my Facebook are related to arwah Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail? He was known as Coco or Wak. His niece Dr Fairuz Ashikin (DEMC) contacted me via LinkedIn, to help clarify 2 names of his sisters - Fatma vs Fatimah. Fatma Ismail was adopted by Tok Busu Melaka and she became known as Fatma Busu of Kg Morten in Melaka. She had attended Kirkby College in 1951-1953 (along with Bapak), and became a teacher, then HM. The other lady, Fatimah Ismail married to Abdul Kadir (FELDA). Fatimah and Abdul Kadir are the parents of Dr Fairuz Ashikin.

He had 2 nicknames: Coco or Koko and Wak. He married Puan Sri To' Puan Khairany bt Mahayuddin. She is called Ani. They have 3 children, a son and two daughters--Prof Aljafri Majid, Dr Elisha Majid, and Ellina Majid.

Prof Aljafri Majid is the first Malay Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was the HOD Surgery at University of Malaya. He married Azirah bt Tan Sri Dato' Justice Hashim Yeop Sani.

Dr Ellisha Majid (Pharmacology) married to Professor Dr Alan Robert Woods (Australian mathematician). They have a boy and a girl - Robert and Sarah. They lived in Mt Claremont, Western Australia. Prof Alan R. Woods passed away in mid-December 2011.

Prof Woods 1953-2011. Alan Robert Woods was born on June 21, 1953, in Brisbane, Australia, as the first child of Geoff and Jess Woods. After obtaining a B.Sc. (Honours, 1st class) in Mathematics at the University of Queensland (1971-1974), he continued his studies, completing first an M.Sc. by research at the University of Monash (1975-1978) and then a Ph.D. at the University of Manchester, UK (1978-1981). His Ph.D. thesis was entitled “Some problems in logic and number theory, and their connections” and was supervised by J.B. Paris. Alan held academic appointments at the University of Malaya (Lecturer, 1982-1985), Yale University (Assistant Professor, 1985-1989) and at the University of Western Australia (Lecturer, 1990-1993, Honorary Research Fellow, 1994-2002, and Adjunct Associate Professor, 2003-2011). He also held visiting positions at Rutgers University (1989), Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (2000), Universite de Versailles Saint-Quentin (2003) and Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (2003). Alan gave about 30 invited lectures at international conferences, Universities and research centers all over the world. He (co-)authored 17 research papers which appeared in prestigious international journals, including the Journal of Symbolic Logic, Theoretical Computer Science and Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, as well as in conference proceedings volumes. He supervised the Ph.D. thesis of J.M. Foy (Yale University), the M.Sc. thesis of K. Fergusson (University of Western Australia) and was alternate supervisor of the Ph.D. thesis of T.N. French (University of Western Australia). Alan was always very keen on discussing ideas with colleagues sharing his interests, ready to contribute highly innovative ideas in several research areas. Orthopaedic Surgery

Coco was a pioneer of orthopaedic surgery in British Malaya. When I interviewed Coco in May 2007 about orthopaedic surgery during his time, he said it was crude. The surgical methods have improved tremendously since then (1950). 

Prof Saw Aik was the only HKL orthopaedic doctor who corresponded with me while I was researching on the early Malay doctors. I had asked Prof Saw Aik whether he had a photo of the old buildings of HKL. He gave me an old photo of HKL that showed many long single-storey buildings. He also provided the names of the orthopaedic pioneers who established orthopaedics at HKL.

On 15 December 2012, I returned to Kuala Lumpur and visited the grounds of Hospital Kuala Lumpur. I walked towards Medan Selara adjacent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur and saw the old orthopedic building. It was a low single-storey building. Its rear was light blue. The front facade was pink.
