PKKN 1930

Pusat Kawalan Kusta Negara (PKKN)
National Leprosy Control Centre

I'm putting some photos first cos my notes on PKKN are at home. I misplaced the PKKN photos and found them today, so I'm hosting them here before I lose them again. I will update re the interview held at PKKN on 6 July 2007 with then Director, Dr Virmal Singh.

Lepers were housed at many places throughout British Malaya including Setapak Camp where Dr Travers was director till he retired in 1925 and returned to Great Britain. Setapak Camp became overcrowded and a new site 12 miles north of Kuala Lumpur was gazetted for leper resettlement. This was Sungei Buloh Settlement (Sungei Buloh however had another name which the locals used).

Sungei Buloh Settlement was constructed beginning 1926 and operated in 1930 (5 years after Dr Travers retired at Setapak Camp). The administration at Sungei Buloh was initially managed by British doctors and nurses. The lepers were mostly Indians and Chinese, with a few Malays. For eleven years (1930 to 1941), Sungei Buloh Settlement had never had a Malay doctor in-charge of administration but confined to other jobs including at the Research Unit (Makmal Penyelidikan).

Having worked many places before, an experienced and skillful Dr Che' Lah was transferred from the District Hospital Klang to the Sungei Buloh Settlement where he served as MO on 25 June 1941.

On 8 December 1941, 5 months after Dr Che Lah joined Sungei Buloh Settlement,
the Japanese attacked Malaya. Soon Malaya fell to the Japanese. The British doctors and nurses at Sungei Buloh Settlement were all inturned in Singapore.

There were no British doctors to serve the Settlement. Dr Che' Lah was the only Malay doctor who had more than 2 years work experience with leprosy. The Japanese administration then appointed Dr Che' Lah as the Medical Superintendent of the Sungei Buloh Settlement on Christmas 1943. Dr Che' Lah served the Japanese administration for almost 2 years till the war was over in September 1945.

Penang Free School 1816

Green Lane, Penang
Penang Free School (PFS) was established on 21 October 1816 at Love Lane but it operated from 1821 to 1924. It moved to its present 30-acre premise at Green Lane and has since operated on 9 January 1924 till today. The building at Love Lane became Penang Museum and is sited near Masjid Kapitan Keling.
[The Victoria Institution (VI) in Kuala Lumpur was founded on 14 August 1893, 77 years after PFS.]

Notes for visitors
Visitation hours: Anytime outside prayer times. When you hear the prayer call (azan), it signifies prayer time. You can decide to remain or leave.
Observing Muslim prayer: You can remain in the grounds or mosque and observe how Muslims pray. There is nothing wrong with observing how Muslims pray. There is no need to feel shy, awkward or intimidated and you don't have to run away or feel unwelcome. Just sit quietly and observe.
If you have just come direct from swimming at the nearby beach, please clean yourself at the washrooms and then step inside the mosque. Do not step inside the mosque when your torsos are dirty and smelly.
Slippers & shoes: Leave them outside the building entrance. Do not step inside the mosque with shoes on!!!
Dress code: Decently dressed
Ladies (Muslims & non Muslims): If you are in shorts or short skirts, you can borrow visitation cloaks (free size) at the main entrance inside the mosque.
There is no visitation fee. The mosque is a free place for all.
Please speak to the security at the entrance inside the mosque building if you wish to photograph inside the mosque. Photography is allowed inside and around the mosque outside prayer times. If you are lucky, there may be a tour guide to take you inside the mosque and tend to all your queries.
The greeting in Islam is "Assalamu'alaikum" which means 'peace unto you'. You will receive a reciprocating 'Salam', and just say 'thank you' and smile!!
If by any chance you feel you want to convert to Islam, you can convey your wish to the security guard, tour guide or anyone at the mosque and they will serve you. You do not have to have to change your name when you convert to Islam. Is it your heart that converts, not your name, you are still the same you!!

History
The East India Company acquired Penang in 1786 and renamed it the Prince of Wales Island.

Masjid Kapitan Keling was built in 1801 by a group of Indian Muslims who arrived on the beaches of Penang in 1797.  The Indians included the Havildars, Jemadars and Sepoys. The Indian community leader or kapitan was an influential rich merchant, Kader Mydin Merican @ Cauder Mydeen @ Cauder Mydin @ Cauder Mohiddeen Merican (1786-1834).

Cauder Mydin's name is inscribed in a monument at GH Penang as a donor in 1879.

Initially, there was a small attap musolla. The mosque had undergone 5 major renovations from 1803 to 1990. A minaret (menara) was added in 1916, before World War I. Part of the mosque (front right prayer corner) was bombed by the Japanese during World War II. The last renovation was performed by an Australian team.

Pitt Street (Lebuh Pitt) was renamed Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling on 26 December 1989.

The mosque and its surroundings was declared a World Heritage Site (Tapak Warisan Dunia) on 22 November 2008, whose ruling include buildings must not exceed 4 storeys.

I'm not sure whether this is factually correct. What I do know is that Datuk Lily Majeed, sister of Ruby, passed away at UMMC following a surgical procedure, earlier this month. Will try to verify further.

I am Hamzah, Dr. Ruby's younger brother, and I wish to post a comment. The report above of her passing is not correct. I am happy to say that Ruby is alive and well. My wife Freida and I had lunch with her today at the home of another sister, Ann. Also present was another sister Rozina. It was my eldest sister, Lily, who sadly left us last year following an angioplasty procedure at UMMC, as correctly reported by Dr. Ridwan Bakar.

Dear Dato Hamzah,
Thank you for your comment and verifying that it was Lily and not Dr Ruby who passed away.

How many books?

This is my first blog on The Early Malay Doctors (TEMD) for 2010. I'm sharing with you some of the writing I have done from 2002 to 2009 (7 years of writing). I have saved my writing into hardcover books. These books are unpublished and kept at home. I make a different coloured hardcover each time there is an opportunity to bind my revised manuscript.
