10,000 Malays Celebrate Birthday Of Mohamed
Rice & Mutton Feast
About 10,000 Malay schoolchildren and adults were entertained to a feast of "nasi briani" (rice and mutton) in celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Mohamed at the Aljunied Islamic School, Victoria Street, yesterday. The festivities were organised by the Muslim community of Singapore. (Seated) crossed-legged on the mat-covered floor of the Aljunied Islamic schoolhouse, boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves over large trays of the "nasi briani" served to groups of four or five. Under a pre-arranged programme, they trooped out to wash their hands after their meals and were then guided out of the building into the compound by Boy Scouts. The adults had their feast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the afternoon, the Malay Boy Scouts gave a display. Lectures on the occasion were given in English, Malay, Arabic and Tamil, and Dr H.S. Moonshi spoke in English on "The Holy Prophet" at 5.30 p.m. at the Aljunied Islamic School. On Thursday, a tea party will be given at the Istana, Kampong Glam, to which non-Muslims will be invited.

5. Dr Mohamed Ibrahim bin Shaik Ismail (1892-1962)

Dr Mohamed Ibrahim bin Shaik Ismail (1892-1962)
LMS 1916 KE VII
Graduated in August 1916 from the King Edward VII Medical School, Singapore

Date of birth: 9 September 1892
Place of birth: Singapore
Date of death: died during Hajj in 1962 . ... to check Hajj schedule for May 1962
Place of death: Madinah, Saudi Arabia
Place of burial: Makkah, Saudi Arabia

Analysis of Singapore's first Malay doctor
  1. Both Dr H. S. Moonshi and Dr S. I. M. Ibrahim graduated in medicine in Singapore in 1916.
  2. However, Dr H. S. Moonshi graduated in March 1916 while Dr S. I. M. Ibrhaim graduated in August 1916.
  3. Dr H. S. Moonshi was born in Surat, India and came to live to Singapore, graduating as the first Muslim doctor. He opened the first Muslim clinic. However, he cannot be considered as Singapore's first Malay doctor for he was not born in Singapore.
  4. Dr S. I. M. Ibrahim was born on 9 September 1892 in Singapore. His father was an archivist with the German Embassy when it first opened in Singapore in 1892. His mother was a noble Bugis lady descended from Dang Anum. His mother was the 4th generation of Dang Anum.
  5. Since Dr S. I. M. Ibrahim was born in Singapore, he qualifies as Singapore's first Malay doctor (born, raised, schooled and educated in Singapore). He had worked a few months/years in Kajang and also in London, but worked mainly in Singapore, till his untimely death during the May 1962 Hajj season. He died in Madinah but was laid to rest in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
  6. Historian, J. M. Gullick had cited Dr Abdul Samad bin Pagak as the 'first Malay doctor' in Singapore when Dr Abdul Samad was involved in Singapore politics in 1921. He noted that Dr Abdul Samad had graduated from the KE VII but did not hold any political posts. However, this information on Dr Abdul Samad as a graduated doctor turns out to be inaccurate. Abdul Samad was born in 1902 and probably just a newly registered medical student in 1921, and not yet a doctor. He was only 19 in 1921, and not a graduated doctor, not 'Dr Abdul Samad' yet.
  7. A check with Prof Edmund J. D. Lee's book, To Sail Uncharted Seas (2005) provided evidence that Dr Abdul Samad graduated in 1928, i.e. 12 years after Dr S. I. M. Ibrahim had practised medicine in Singapore.
  8. Dr Abdul Samad's full name is Dr Abdul Samat bin Haji Pagak as appeared in a newspaper article that listed visitors to the Asylum; his name was the last entry of 32 names. He was of Bugis descent.
  9. In a newspaper article re a Singapore election campaign, it had Dr Abdul Samad's portrait and his birthplace. Dr Abdul Samad was born in Malaya, however, the locale in Malaya was unspecified. If he was born in Singapore, he would have stated Singapore as his birthplace. So he was not born in Singapore but in a state in Malaya. Where? Which state? Why didn't he state Johor or any state? Why did he state Malaya? Had he obtained Singapore citizenship and therefore the state where he was born did not matter? Did he move to Singapore as a child or after he graduated as a doctor? Why was he involved in politics when he entered medical school?
  10. I have eliminated both Dr H. S. Moonshi and Dr Abdul Samad as described above.
  11. In conclusion, Dr S. I. M. Ibrahim is Singapore's first Malay doctor.

Researcher's notes:
  1. There is a man named Dr Naheed bin Dr Husin, whom I met at a wedding in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He was the head of veterinary services in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan in the early 1980s. I don't have his telephone #.
  2. Kak Insun Sony Mustapha Fenner is also related to Dr Husin. Kak Insun Sony belongs to the Jenaton clan, a royal Indonesian clan from Pagaruyung Palace in Paya Kumboh, West Sumatra.

Faridah Abdul Rashid
18 December 2017 at 19:10 ·
Some of you may recall Dr Naheed bin Dr Husin, who is a vet and who once headed the veterinary services at Jabatan Haiwan in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan in the early 1980s. I remember dealing with Jabatan Haiwan when I first came to work at HUSM in Kelantan. Dr Naheed remembers me from 1983, but I can't recall him at all. I met him at a wedding in Kelantan in 2017. This is a photo of him with my husband Affandi at the wedding. I only took this one photo and I didn't take his hp#.

I remember researching on his father, Dr Husin bin Ibrahim and his younger brother Dr Mohamed bin Ibrahim for my books (but I didn't publish about the 2 doctors).

Dr Mohamed bin Ibrahim was in an MMA photo in KL with my grandfather, Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos.

Dr Naheed's brother is Azam, the money-changer in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Dr Naheed also has a sister in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Dr Naheed said his family was split during WW2. His family's roots are in Perak.

I remember Kak Insun Sony Mustapha Fenner and the rest had a family tree in Word.doc. I checked that and found the Ibrahim family members on that sheet - they are the Sapura people.

I also checked Geni.com, and they are my father's people too (joined at the nenek moyang level). So Dr Naheed bin Dr Husin, and his people are related to my father, on the Perak side.

I'm uncertain where Jaffar Rawas and Laila Rawas come into the picture or how they are/not related to my father. I met Jaffar Rawas in 1969-1971 when he came over to our house in P. Chepa and another time when my dad was talking to him at his shop in KB.

Insun Sony Mustapha Fenner:
Yes, we are related to Arwah Sapura in 2 ways. Sapura is related to me via her parents and also via Tan Sri Wan Mahmood, a Janaton member married to P S Sara, sister to Sapura.

Insun Sony Mustapha Fenner:
Dr Husin is the father of Sapura and Sara. So Dr Naheed must be their brother. I have seen him but do not remember where.

Ida Husain:
Jaffar Rawas was a nephew of my late step-grandfather Sheikh Ali. He passed away many years ago and his children have taken over his business. I know a few of them but the one named Abdul will always be the one who will chat with me if I meet him. The others that l can recall are Aziz and Abdullah. I have a step-aunty Umi Fatimah who is my late father's half-sister that l have not met for such a very long time who may shed some light on Aruah Jaffar Rawas.

Dinner at Memorial Hall.
Honouring Dr. A. Samat.
(By Our Muslim Correspondent).
Under the auspices of the "Kesatuan Melayu" (Malay Union)
of Singapore, a dinner was given at the Victoria Memorial Hall
on Wednesday May 30th., in honour of Dr. Abdul Samat bin Haji Pagak,
who recently qualified as a Licentiate of Medicine and Surgery
of the local King Edward College of Medicine.
The total number of guests was about one hundred, among whom
were His Excellency the Governor and Lady Clifford and a large
number of Europeans including many members of the teaching staff
of the Medical College and their wives. After the King's Toast,
proposed by His Excellency, speeches in Malay were made by
His Excellency the Governor, Mr. R. J. Farrer, President of the
Municipality and Chairman of the Muhammedan Advisory Board,
and the Honourable Inche Mohamed Eunos bin Abdullah, the President
of the "Kesatuan Melayu". Dr Abdul Samat bin Haji Pagak
suitable replied. Dr Hamza bin Haji Taib of Muar, also a
graduate of the King Edward College of Medicine, made a speech
in English. Since the Medical College was established in Singapore,
many Malays have obtained their medical diplomas from it, but most
of them came from Johore and other native states.
Dr Abdul Samat, however, is the first local Malay to qualify
as a medico. Being a Malay, Dr Abdul Samat has the opportunity
to gain the confidence of the Malays with regard to western medicine and
western ways of treating sickness; and it is hoped that he will
avail himself of the opportunity to try to lower the infantile
death-rate among the Malays.

POSTWAR AUSTERITY HARI RAYA
The Straits Times, 29 August 1946, Page 5
There will be no large scale Hari Raya Puasa celebrations
in Singapore today, although Dr. Abdul Samat, a local Malay
leader, says that Muslims "will try to froget the recent rice
cut and transport difficulties for the day."
A message by the Sultan of Selangor to Malayan Muslims urges them
to exercise restraint in celebrating Hari Raya Puasa.
Advising them against buying things at exorbitant prices, the
Sultan says: "If God permits, we will be able to have the grandest
celebration ever during Hari Raya next year, when our country has recovered
from the after-effects of war."
Muslims from all parts of Singapore will gather at the Sultan Mosque
in Arab Street and offer prayers throughout the day.
The Chief Kathi, Singapore, states that for the benefit of
Muslim servicemen in Singapore, Hari Raya Puasa prayers will be said
today at 8.35 a.m. at Sultan Mosque.
